Call for Papers: Value of Care Graduate Research Workshops

Deadline: January 31, 2014

In 2014 the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center’s Graduate Affiliates Program is offering a unique opportunity for graduate students who focus on care as a central concern of their research. This program is presented in conjunction with the IHC’s Value of Care series. Over the course of the Winter and Spring terms, we will hold three workshops in which scholars will present their work and receive focused feedback about papers, articles, or essays in progress that address the topic of care. Presenters will receive a $50 certificate to the UCSB bookstore.

Those pursuing research on the following subtopics are encouraged to apply, though we are excited to expand beyond this list:

Current or past cultures/communities of care
Institutional practices of care
Caregivers as workers/the economics of care/care and neoliberalism
Care and memory, history, and trauma
Play, narrative, voice, and sound as care
Care and the non-human (ecology, ahuman ethics)
Care as watchfulness/vigilance/anxiety/surveillance
Care and the state
Self-directed practices of care
Caring machines
Care giving or receiving as threat
The gender of care
Care, death, and mourning
Care and space/ the architecture of care
Care at the university

The workshop series will conclude with a final forum open to the public on June 2 from 3-6 pm.
