Thomas Doran is a Doctoral Candidate in English. His dissertation is titled Vulgar Ethology: A Prehistory of Animal Protection in Atlantic Natural History
Vulgar Ethology examines how American naturalists conducted, narrated, and valued their interactions with animals in the period leading up to the nineteenth-century animal protection movement. It examines how animal protectionist rhetoric emerged alongside the developing study of animal behavior in eighteenth and early nineteenth-century natural history, and to what extent this co-development hinged on the various rhetorical modes naturalists encountered when disseminating their work.
