Organization: Santa Barbara Education Foundation

The Santa Barbara Education Foundation (SBEF) provides and supports programs that enrich the academic, artistic, and personal development of all students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD). “Literacy Moves” is an initiative run in collaboration between the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, First Five, and SBUSD. The initiative takes all SBUSD preschool students on field trips around Santa Barbara. The focus of the work is twofold: first, to provide preschool students (and often their parents) with the opportunity to explore places that play an important role in life of the community, from public institutions to sites of historical interest; and second, to introduce relevant, age-appropriate vocabulary and concepts while doing so. “Literacy Moves” began in 2024 and is still being fine-tuned and developed, building on valuable feedback from parents, teachers, and students about previous field trips. The program’s goals are to empower children and their family members to engage with local cultural and civic resources while strengthening early literacy skills.

Position: “Literacy Moves” Program Development Fellow

The “Literacy Moves” Program Development Fellow will help create a more formal structure for the “Literacy Moves” program, including a drafting budget, documenting current partners, and identifying opportunities for growth. This internship is an opportunity to learn about aspects of early childhood education, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and literacy in education and to gain experience in conceptualizing and developing programs.

The “Literacy Moves” Program Development Fellow will complete the internship in 200 total hours, beginning in June 2025.
