The new IHC Research Focus Group 4Humanities@UCSB invites faculty and graduate students to its first organization meeting. 4Humanities@UCSB will function both independently and as one of the first local chapters of “4Humanities: Advocating for the Humanities,” an international initiative Alan co-founded last November. The general 4Humanities initiative (http://humanistica.ualberta.ca/) includes scholars, students, and others interested in advocacy for the humanities. The initiative is supported by the international digital humanities community on the premise that digital new media today have a special role to play in effective humanities advocacy.
As an RFG, 4Humanities@UCSB will meet during the year around a few topics and readings, including public discourse on the humanities; current media and other technologies for advocacy, publicity, and exhibition; and present and past advocacy methods (including in other social areas). Beyond discussion, however, the RFG will also be a production shop. It will write posts for 4Humanities, start a project to recruit statements and video interviews, and build up a set of advocacy resources.
Faculty contacts: Alan Liu (ayliu@english.ucsb.edu); Claudio Fogu (cfogu@frit.ucsb.edu). Graduate student contact: Lindsay Thomas (lindsaythomas@umail.ucsb.edu).
