This year’s theme will be the interdisciplinary appreciation of masks, masquerades, faces, concealments, costumes, alternative voices, and emerging cultural identities in Mexican, Chicano and Chicana societies. The conference will also deal with the cultural manifestation of the border, translation, and poetry from the standpoint of masquerades and concealments. From the mystery of real masks worn at masquerades to the deceptions played out by the use of disguises, this year’s conference offers another interpretation of that which we see, read, and hear.
The colloquium will be honored with the participation of many distinguished graduate students, scholars, and prestigious writers, among them Miryam Moscona, award-winning poet and author of Blanco marfil, Mónica Lavín, author of Yo, la peor (Premio de Novela Elena Poniatowska de la Ciudad de México). Besides the high academic level of the colloquium, we also will have cultural activities like mask contests and the participation of the Folkloric Dance Group Raíces de mi Tierra, which involves many students of the Chicano and Chicana community.
